Have you ever eaten something strictly out of boredom, stress, loneliness, or a feeling of nervousness? If you raised your hand, or answered, “yes” there’s no need to worry because you’re not alone. At one time or another, we’ve all eaten for reasons other than hunger. This month I’m going to share with how hypnosis can work in conjunction whatever you’re already doing or thinking about doing in the future to reach your weight loss goals.
My experience has been that people set out to reduce their weight with the best intentions in mind. They come up with a healthy eating plan, whether they do that on their own or they work with someone who is licensed or credentialed in some way. They may even make a vow to be more active and perhaps they go so far as to join a gym or employ a personal trainer. While those are tremendous action steps, quite often the missing piece, and arguably the most important, in this lifestyle change is the mental approach. I think most of us would be in agreement that our thoughts have an effect on our actions. If we’re going to embark on setting a goal for ourselves and completing it; without the proper mind set our efforts are bound to come up short. For the person who is truly motivated and wants to change, hypnosis can be the missing piece because it reprograms the subconscious mind to change the thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and emotions that trigger you to reach for the foods that are undermining your success.
Regardless of your current weight situation we have all been programmed in some fashion to equate food with safety, comfort and security. This stems from the time when we were first born. Whenever you cried, your mother, of course with the best intentions in mind, would pick you up and hold and cradle you. If a diaper change was not in order, chances are she assumed you were hungry and she fed you. This happened hundreds of times during that first year or so and the safety and security that came with being held, cradled and fed soon became imprinted in our subconscious mind that food equals safety, comfort and security.
In a previous article, I mentioned that we all have a need to feel a sense of internal security. Without some minimum level of internal security we become frightened, nervous, or upset. The primary function of the subconscious mind is protect us from danger; either real or imagined. If we perceive a threat to our feelings of internal security the protective subconscious steps in to correct this. Through the years I’ve had clients whose weight gain has come in conjunction with very stressful periods in their lives. That has included struggles at school, a business failure, financial stress, a traumatic event, and a divorce or the ending of a relationship. When we’re overwhelmed by these situations we feel insecure and as our insecurity increases the subconscious mind looks to rectify this. The subconscious mind remembers the script that was imprinted from being picked up by our mother that equates food with comfort, safety, or security and years later when we’re presented with these uncomfortable feelings we take solace in food.
Someone once said of the subconscious mind, “It’s a wonderful servant and a terrible master.” Wouldn’t be great to eliminate that feeling of the need to eat for emotional reasons? Wouldn’t it be fabulous to program your mind to drink more water throughout your day? How great would it be if you could envision yourself one year, three years, maybe even five years from now having reached your weight loss goals? What would you look like? What would you be wearing? How would your life be different? All of this is possible with hypnosis.
I encourage people to embark on a weight reduction program that incorporates a healthy eating plan, a sensible and active lifestyle, and mental conditioning. At the same time the nutritionist, dietician, personal trainer, coach, and hypnotist are all simply facilitators. Ultimately you are responsible for your success. There’s no reason why maintaining a healthy weight should be constant struggle. You can look great and feel great because you are already great. You can eat less and enjoy food more with a process that helps you take back control. If you would like to learn more about hypnosis I would happy to answer any questions that you have.

Can anyone be hypnotized
Yes, as long as you are willing to be hypnotized. Hypnosis is not mind control and a hypnotist can’t make you do anything that you don’t want to do. Hypnosis is a mutual process between the hypnotist and the client and the techniques and program will be customized for you. Our clients report they easily achieve the state and can use it for their continued success long after the sessions are over. Learn more about hypnosis.
